Driving a race car is not something that comes natural for
most people.  Among the many qualities associated with the
sport are above-average hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes,
and a willingness to push it to the edge without worrying about
the consequences.

Seventeen-year-old Sebastopol resident Bradley Terrell has all
those attributes and more, competing as one of the youngest
drivers on the Northern California 360 Sprint Car series circuit.

The incoming Analy senior is in his fourth season running
Sprint Cars, and caught the racing bug when he began
competing in go-cart races at the tender age of six.
Most Saturday nights, Terrell can be found tearing around the
Petaluma Speedway in speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Although Terrell has developed a genuine talent and love for the sport, it was his father Shane who was the catalyst for what could prove to be a long career in racing.

“My dad always wanted to race when he was young, but his parents wouldn’t let him,” noted the younger Terrell. “For me, the biggest challenge in racing is in staying patient and not losing your head out there. It’s a lot of fun.”

Terrell has already enjoyed his share of success on the 360 Sprint Car racing circuit, having recorded two wins in 2007 and another this year. With the help of his dad and local racing sponsors Argonaut Construction and Millhouse Glass, Terrell hopes to expand his racing career after high school graduation.

“It can be a fairly expensive hobby, but if I wasn’t racing I’d probably be spending money on something else,” he reasoned. “I plan to race in Chico, Placerville and Watsonville this year and hope to move up to the faster, 410 Sprint Cars in the future.”
Fast and Furious - Bradley Terrell has made a name for himself on the 360 Sprint Car racing circuit, competing on Saturday nights at the Petaluma Speedway.

Teenager Terrell terrific in sprint car triumph
Youth is bering served at Petaluma Speedway

FOR THE ARGUS-COURIER

There is something happening here, and what it is makes fans stand up and cheer. The youngsters are rapidly moving to the head of the class in sprint car racing. The most challenging high-speed, high-horsepower division in open-wheel racing, a long-time bastion of veteran drivers, is being infused by a talented group of youthful, but experienced, drivers ready for big-time competition.

The Petaluma Speedway youth movement began in 2005 with the crowning of 21-year-old Brian Azevedo as the youngest-ever 360 sprint car champion. This season, four of the division’s top 10 drivers are teenagers, and one is just 22.

Sixteen-year-old Bradley Terrell of Sebastopol received a huge boost of confidence and recognition Saturday night by topping a 20-car field to gain his first feature win at the Petaluma track. He was also the night’s fastest qualifier with quick time of 12.760. Despite his age, Terrell is in his third year racing potent sprint cars, and won his first-ever feature earlier this year at another race track.

A front-row starter next to Alissa Geving, who two weeks ago became the youngest feature winner in Petaluma Speedway history, Terrell tucked into second place as Geving set a frantic pace, reaching the lappers after five circuits, and bristling through the field. “I knew if I hung in there and she got into lapped traffic something would happen,” said the soft-spoken, and surprisingly calm Terrell, who will be a junior at Analy High School next fall.

Sixteen laps into the fray, Geving encountered a cluster of slower cars in turn 4, one of which was out of shape and she crashed into it, flipping her race car. Discouraged, but unhurt, she was finished and her car was towed off the track.

“I was far enough back to see it all happen and I got through it,” explained Terrell, after leading the final nine laps and notching the win over Scott Merrell, Adam McCarthy, Shawn Arriaga, Art McCarthy Jr., Roberto Kirby, Bill Cornwell, Kirk Simpson, Matt DeMartini and Arvo Backholm.

BT claims 2nd Win of 2008 season!!!
By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (8-23-08) - Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell powered his way to victory lane Saturday night in the All Pro Point Series sprint car feature event at Petaluma Speedway. The victory was 17-year-old Terrell’s fourth win of the 2008 racing season aboard the Terrell Racing owned, Argonaut Construction-Millhouse Glass sponsored #43 Maxim sprint car.
Terrell entered Saturday’s event, the final regular point race of the season at Petaluma Speedway, in the fifth place position in the point standings. Currently in his fourth consecutive year of sprint car racing, Terrell set his sights on a top finish early in the night to maintain his top five status in the series point standings. One additional point race remains at Petaluma Speedway which is a Civil War event on September 13th that also awards accumulative points in the All Pro Series standings.
With nineteen cars in competition, Terrell started his evening with a ninth place position in qualifying, turning a 13.217 second lap on the 3/8 mile track that was rough for all competitors as early as qualifying on Saturday night. Fellow competitor Brandon Davis of Rohnert Park was the fast qualifier of the night with a 12:762.
In heat racing competition, Terrell took to the track for the eight lap preliminary event starting in the fourth position. When the checkered flag flew, Terrell finished in second place, securing a good starting position within the inversion for the 25-lap feature event later in the evening.
When the field took to the track for the All Pro feature event, Terrell started started in the eighth position, on the outside of the fourth row. Davis started on the pole position with Roberto Kirby on the outside for the green flag.
As early as the opening lap, Terrell advanced into the fourth place position when Kirby and Bill Cornwell, who started fifth, spun and drew a caution flag. With no laps complete, the restart placed Terrell in the fourth place position on the outside of Penngrove’s Alissa Geving. When Geving was slowed by the rough track in turn four, Terrell passed for the position and continued to battle with veteran driver Craig Smith. On the 13th lap of the race, Terrell advanced into second place behind Davis and the two young guns of the North Bay began to battle for the lead heading into lapped traffic. Terrell assumed the lead on the 14th lap and maintained it despite working his way into lapped traffic and a restart on the 19th lap of the race that placed Davis on his tail for the restart. At the checkered flag Terrell drove to his fourth victory ahead of Davis, Geving, Arvo Backholm and Smith.
With the victory, Terrell unofficially advances into the fourth position in the standings and trails Kirby by 8-points for the third position heading into the September 13th Civil War race and the final points race for the All Pro Series campaign. Terrell’s performance in the standings is quite noteworthy as he missed the first three point races of the season.
During Saturday’s event, Terrell’s #43 Maxim was powered by a new motor owned by team sponsor Jim Vanlare. Vanlare recently completed a 360 sprint car that will be a rental for future races and requested that Terrell run the motor Saturday night to test its performance. The result was a very fast car for Saturday’s event.
“I really want to thank Jim VanLare for giving me the opportunity to run his new motor tonight,” said Terrell. “It was great to get another win and give the motor a good showing with the win. Now we’ll take a week off and prepare for the Gold Cup Civil War race in Chico in a couple of weeks.”
Despite missing the first two races of the year, Terrell is 12th in the California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series which competes at five tracks for 15 different events throughout California. The next event take place Wednesday, September 3 at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico and is known as the “Pacific Sprint Cup” which opens the annual Gold Cup Race of Champions week.

Terrell geared for final All Pro Points race and Civil War Series at Petaluma Saturday

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (9-13-08)
Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell will return to his
home track of Petaluma Speedway this Saturday
night for the final All Pro Point Series event of the
season as well as the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil
War Sprint Car Series.

Driving his Terrell Racing owned,
Argonaut Construction-Millhouse Glass
sponsored #43 Maxim sprint car, the 17-year-old
third year sprint car driver will look for his fifth
feature event victory of the year at the track he
calls home and possible first ever victory in the
traveling Civil War Sprint Car Series.

“I always enjoy when the Civil War Series comes to our home track,” said Terrell. “It would mean a lot to get a top finish in this event and have a good showing on the final race of the year. We’re looking forward to it.”

Terrell returns to the North Bay 3/8 mile following competition in the annual Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational in Chico last week. The Wednesday night event opened four big nights of racing featuring the World of Outlaws and the best drivers in California competing in an invitational event featuring the top 32 cars in the Civil War campaign.

After turning the 10th fastest  lap in qualifying, Terrell drove from fourth place into second in the 10-lap preliminary heat race to secure a starting position in the 30-lap A-feature. During the event, Terrell was clearly on his way to a top ten finish in the race until a flat rear tire late in the event forced him to a 16th place finish in the race.

Despite the tough luck in Chico, Terrell advanced one position in the Civil War standings and will enter Saturday’s race in the 11th position overall. He has one top five finish in the 9 starts he has made in the Civil War and three top ten finishes. Saturday’s event is also the final All Pro Points race of the season for the Petaluma Speedway championship. Terrell is fourth in the standings and is a four time feature winner in the weekly championship series.

Following Saturday’s event, Terrell will continue to compete with the Civil War Sprint Car Series. One week from Saturday he will travel to the south bay when the series makes its one time visit to Ocean Speedway. In two weeks the series will conclude on September 27th at Placerville Speedway. Following the Civil War Series, 360 sprint car racing continues in Northern California with the Pacific Sprint Fall Nationals in October followed by the Annual Trophy Cup in Tulare.

Bradley Terrell has a number of marketing partners including Argonaut Const, Millhouse Glass, the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, Randy Hanson Auto Body and Paint. Terrell to be back in action at Tulare Trophy Cup

By Bill Sullivan

TULARE, CA (10-23-08)

After more than a month long hiatus,
Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell will return to
the drivers’ seat  of his Argonaut Construction
Millhouse Glass sponsored #43 Maxim sprint
car later this week to compete in California’s
most lucrative race for 360 sprint cars.
Terrell will be on the entry list for the prestigious
15th Annual Trophy Cup, the high dollar event
that benefits the Make a Wish Foundation
annually at the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway.

The last time Bradley Terrell strapped into a sprint car was in early September when he competed at Silver Dollar Speedway for the annual Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational Civil War event.  On that night a potential top five run concluded with a flat tire but Terrell managed to salvage a 16th place finish in the 30-lap feature event.

Since that Wednesday night in Chico a busy personal schedule has kept Terrell from competing on a regular basis. Now his family owned team has regrouped, recharged and the 17-year-old third year sprint car driver is looking forward to competing in the second Trophy Cup of his career.

“I can’t wait to get back on the track this weekend,” said Terrell. “This is our second year running in the Trophy Cup and I’m really excited to be coming back for this race. I have to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication over the past few weeks as we regrouped and prepared for this event, my family, my crew and all my sponsors and a whole lot of friends have worked hard to get us back on track.”

The Trophy Cup’s unique format will be a bit different this year with the addition of the extra night of racing that will lead up to the 50 lap Saturday night main event that will be totally inverted based on points acquired up to that point. With over $112,000 up for grabs over the three day period, Terrell hopes to fare well in his final race of the 2008 racing season, an event that is very special as it all takes place for a good cause.

During this season, Terrell completed his most successful year behind the wheel of a full sized sprint car. At his home track of Petaluma Speedway, Terrell claimed a total of four feature victories on the 3/8 mile action track. In the travelling Civil War campaign, Terrell garnered one top five finish, three top tens and two heat race wins in the 9 races he competed in and finished the year 19th in the overall standings of the series.

“We had a really strong year this year,” added Terrell. “We got a late start to the season and we still managed to advance in the points at both Petaluma and the Civil War Series. My team and crew did a great job of coming from behind and making up some lost ground early in the year.”

Bradley Terrell’s marketing partners including Argonaut Const, Millhouse Glass, the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, Randy Hanson Auto Body and Paint. Vanlare Steering Repair, A1 Shower and Mirror Incorporated, DK Embroidery, Knockout Signs, Allied of Santa Rosa and Sausalito and Altes Engineering.  Public Relations for Bradley Terrell Racing  are provided by Sullivan Images.  For additional information on Bradley Terrell, visit his official team website at www.bradleyterrell.com.

Those wishing to visit the Trophy Cup this weekend, should know that the front grandstand General Admission Bleacher tickets will cost $20 on Thursday, $25 on Friday and $30 on Saturday. Reserved Grandstand seats will be $25 on Thursday, $30 on Friday and $35 on Saturday. Tickets will available through the track office until noon on Thursday by calling (559) 688-0909. After that the Thunderbowl Raceway box office will open at 1pm with tickets being on sale by cash only. On Friday and Saturday the box office is scheduled to open at 10am with tickets being on sale by cash only as well.

Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell caps off 2008 season with strong run in 15th annual Trophy Cup

By Bill Sullivan

TULARE, CA (10-25-08)

After more than a month off, Sebastopol’s
Bradley Terrell returned to the drivers’ seat of
his Argonaut Construction-Millhouse Glass
sponsored #43 Maxim sprint car last weekend
to one of California’s most lucrative race for
360 sprint cars.,the 15th Annual Trophy Cup
at the Tulare Thunderbowl in Tulare, California.

The annual Trophy Cup is a very unique event with a creative format, a purse exceeding $100,000 and the best part of it all is that it benefits the Make a Wish Foundation. The event gives local racers like Terrell an opportunity to compete with a select group of the best drivers in the nation for a healthy payout and for a very good cause.

“I was really forward to this race this year,” said Terrell, who had been out of the drivers’ seat for several weeks with a very busy personal schedule. “It was a great way to get back on track and wrap up our season. I’m really happy with the way the entire weekend and I have to thank my entire team and all my sponsors for their great support. We can carry this positive momentum into the 2009 season.”

The Trophy Cup began on Thursday evening with qualifying, preliminary heat races and  a preliminary feature event. In qualifying, Terrell placed an impressive 13th our of the field of 58 cars. His first of three nights of racing wrapped up with a sixth place finish in his race. On this particular night the top three drivers transferred  into the preliminary feature event so the team began focusing on their return the following night.

On Friday night, Terrell returned and after a hard fought battle with Kyle Hirst, six was once again the magic number as he finished just one notch out of the top five. On this given night a B-feature was on the agenda. Terrell muscled his way to a fourth place qualifying position when the white flag waved until fellow driver Shane Golobic stole the position at the checkered flag. Despite finishing one spot out of the transfer positions, Terrell garnered a great deal of accumulative points during the two nights.

The Trophy Cup format sends the top 24 point earners directly into the high dollar Saturday night A-feature. Terrell was just one spot away from the line up, sitting 25th in the standings. In the B-feature, Terrell started on the front row outside of Placerville Speedway track champion Colby Wiesz. The four time Petaluma Speedway feature winner was running strong for the majority of the race until he encountered handling woes and faded back to th seventh position at the checkered flag.

At the end of the night it was discovered that Terrell had suffered a rear shock failure which caused the car to handle differently late in the race. Despite ending his night in the B-feature, Terrell and the entire #43 team were happy with their success at one of Northern California’s most coveted sprint car races.

“I would have liked to make into the A main and I was on my way until the car went away on me,” said Terrell. “But I’m happy with the way we performed. Its’ always hard to come back after a long break and be competitive and we really came back strong in this event. I’m already looking forward to next year.”

In 2009, Terrell’s preliminary  plans will include a return to the weekly All Pro Sprint Car Series at Petaluma Speedway as well as competing in the traveling Civil War Sprint Car Series and various special events that have yet to be announced.

Terrell teams with veteran driver Jim VanLare to open Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series season

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (3-23-09)

Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell will take his first green flag
of the 2009 racing season this Saturday night thanks to
the assistance of a family friend and a well known racer
from the North Bay. While his own car is still under
construction, eighteen-year-old Terrell will strap into the
competitive #5v Sprint Car owned by Jim VanLare of
Santa Rosa to begin his fourth year of sprint car racing.

“I really want to thank Jim Vanlare and his family and sponsors for giving me this opportunity,” said Terrell. “My car is not quite ready just yet and I didn’t want to miss the first few races of the year again. I can’t thank him enough for his help and generosity. I’m looking forward to getting back on the track.”

Late last season, Terrell raced with a motor built by VanLare in an effort to break it in for the friend of the family. On that night, he won his fourth victory of the season at Petaluma Speedway. Hopefully, such luck will continue for the duo as Terrell utilizes not only the motor, but the entire car. Both Terrell and VanLare have had their share of success on the Petaluma Speedway 3/8 mile and by combining forces should be a competitive force in this upcoming All Pro Sprint Car Series opener.

In 2008, Terrell focused on the All Pro Sprint Car Series at Petaluma Speedway as well as the traveling Civil War Sprint Car Series. At this home track of Petaluma, he captured four feature wins and finished fourth in the point standings despite a handful of absences during the year. In the Civil War Series Terrel raced in nine of the 15 scheduled events. He finished 19th overall in the standings and concluded the year with three top ten finishes, one top five and two heat race wins in the competitive series.

Terrell began his racing career at the early age of six as many youngsters do, racing outlaw karts in the northern region of California such as Lakeport and Red Bluff. After great success, he advanced to full size sprint cars in 2006 and began racing at Petaluma Speedway and area tracks. The first generation driver is known for his clean racing style, great sense of humor and true sportsmanship, qualities that are important today for young racers wishing to advance in the sport of auto racing.

This Saturday, Terrell will be aboard the VanLare Steering Repair #5v Maxim at Petaluma Speedway. In the coming weeks he will continue seeking sponsorship and complete his family owned #43 sprint car to continue his campaign in the 2009 Petaluma Speedway All Pro Championship and select events throughout California such at the Civil War Series, the annual Trophy Cup in Tulare and much more. “I’m really looking forward to the season,” said Terrell. “Thankfully with the help of Jim VanLare we may be able to compete in the entire season without missing races in the beginning. We did pretty well last year despite the nights off and I think we’ll be very competitive in the season to come if we can get our sponsorship program where it needs to be and have some strong finishes.”

Jim Vanlare’s sponsors of the #5V sprint car include crown-designs.net , Pronol Race Fuel , Randy Hanson Auto Body and Aussie Towing. Bradley Terrell would like to that his longtime supporters as he begins the new season as well including Argonaut Const, Millhouse Glass, the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, Randy Hanson Auto Body and Paint. Vanlare Steering Repair, A1 Shower and Mirror Incorporated, DK Embroidery, Allied of Santa Rosa and Sausalito and Altes Engineering. To learn more about Bradley Terrell or to inquire about sponsorship of this 2009 racing team, visit his official website at http://www.bradleyterrell.com. Terrell drives Vanlare Sprint Car to clean sweep in Petaluma All Pro Opener

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (3-28-09)

Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell
started the 2009 racing season
off in winning fashion Saturday night.
Terrell drove his way to victory in the
season opening Petaluma Speedway
All Pro sprint car series aboard the
Vanlare Steering Repair #5V sprint car.

“I really have to thank Jim Vanlare for letting me drive his car for the night,” said Terrell, who would have missed the opener if it hadn’t been for the veteran car owner from Santa Rosa who offered his ride when he learned Terrell’s motor was still under construction. “Last year we missed the first few races and we made it to fourth in the point standings. I know we would have done better and I didn’t want to start a season off like that again. I really appreciate what the VanLare family did for me.”

Saturday was not the first time that the combination of Terrell and VanLare were victorious at Petaluma’s 3/8 mile track. Late last season, Terrell utilized a new motor built by Vanlare to break it in. On that night he claimed victory on his hometown track as well.

Saturday night it was a perfect combination of man and machine at Petaluma Speedway for Terrell. His success began in the heat race when he charged from third place into second on the opening lap to begin pursuit of veteran driver Art McCarthy. After chasing McCarthy for much of the race, Terrell went to the outside of the second turn on the sixth lap to pass for the lead he would never relinquish.

“I had a little bit of trouble in the first few laps with the way we had the car set up,” said Terrell. “I adapted to it and made it work. After the heat we made the needed changes for the A main.”

In the A-main, Terrell put on an impressive performance from the opening green flag of the race. Starting in the 8th position, the 18 year old high school senior went to the high side and followed fellow competitor Jeff Parady around five cars. Before the initial lap was complete, Terrell then overtook the driver that led him towards the front when he moved inside of Parady inside of turns three and four to take second place.

Once in the bridesmaid position, Terrell began pursuit of early race leader and former track champion Shawn Arriaga. Following the only restart of the race on the third lap he moved to the high side of the track and overtook the lead position from Arriaga, completing his 7 position run in less than four laps.

After he claimed the lead, Terrell began working his way into lapped traffic to distance himself from Arriaga and the field. Prior to completion of the event, he lapped his way past McCarthy who was running in 8th at the time.

Following Saturday’s victory that will unofficially place him in the All Pro Series point lead, Terrell will take one week off from the driver’s seat as he prepares his family owned #43 sprint car for the upcoming Civil War Sprint Car Series event at Petaluma Speedway on April 11th. The event marks the opening of the traveling tour and a top run will launch Terrell forward in the point standings of the competitive campaign.

“We’re going to take this week off to get my car ready for the Civil War,” said Terrell. “I’m looking forward to the series starting at Petaluma and hopefully we can have a strong finish to start it off.”

After the April 11th Civil War opener, Terrell plans to continue his pursuit of the 2009 Petaluma Speedway All Pro Sprint Car Championship. He will also compete in the Civil War Series throughout the season.

Jim Vanlare’s sponsors of the #5V sprint car that Terrell was aboard Saturday include Randy Hanson Auto Body and Aussie Towing. Bradley Terrell would like to that his longtime supporters as he begins the new season as well including Argonaut Const, Millhouse Glass, the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, Randy Hanson Auto Body and Paint. Terrell drives family owned 360 sprint car to top ten finish in Petaluma GSC event

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (4-20-09)  - Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell brought a knife to a gunfight Saturday night at his hometown track of Petaluma Speedway. Terrell drove his family owned 360 sprint car at the Golden State Challenge Sprint Car event and despite competing in an event populated by 410 cubic inch powered machines; Terrell took home a top ten finish at the end of the night.
“Things started our kind of bad with qualifying towards the back and our heat race,” said Terrell. “But in the main with a few cars crashing ahead of me and gaining a few positions it ended up being a pretty good night.”
One week after he drove Jim VanLare’s car to victory in the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series opener, Terrell completed construction of his family owned #43 360 powered sprint car in time to enter Saturday’s Golden State Challenge event. It was the prime opportunity to test and tune his equipment and gain valuable seat time following the long off season.
In qualifying, Terrell turned a time of 13:256 seconds on the Petaluma 3/8 mile track, which placed him in the 19th qualifying position. In the preliminary 10-lap heat race, Terrell crossed the line in 7th place. With 23 cars entered in the field, a B feature was not on the schedule Saturday night and Terrell started 19th in the 30-lap feature event.
The waving of the green flag in Saturday’s money race was followed by a caution flag when a multi car collision broke out and dramatically changed the line up for the restart. Terrell avoided the melee and used it to his advantage to advance in the field.
By the time the checkered flag waved, Terrell finished the night in 10th place. In a race that was populated by 410 sprint cars on a night that was meant to test and tune the Terrell Racing team was pleased with the evening.
Saturday night was Terrell’s third consecutive race of the season at Petaluma Speedway. One week ago he competed in the Civil War Series opener and had a night of early season bad luck that kept him out of the feature event.
“We had a tough night in the Civil War,” said Terrell. “I was running 2nd in my heat and blew a steering box hose then I couldn’t get past Richard Bailey in the B and ended up finishing seventh to end our night. We rolled the car in the trailer but we weren’t thrilled with our results.”
Two weeks ago, Terrell drove the competitive #5v sprint car owned by Santa Rosa sprint car veteran Jim VanLare in the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series opener. The victory placed Terrell in the early season point lead at Petaluma Speedway. This Saturday night the All Pro Series returns for the second event of the 2009 racing season.
Bradley Terrell would like to his longtime supporters of the Terrell family owned #43 sprint car. Terrell to pilot VanLare Steering and Repair #5v for entire Petaluma All Pro Series

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (4/22/09)
Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell  has
signed with veteran car owner and
former driver Jim VanLare of Santa
Rosa to pilot the competitive VanLare
Steering and Repair #5v Sprint Car for
the entire 2009 Petaluma Speedway
All Pro Sprint Car Series.

“This is very exciting for us,” said Terrell. “I really have to thank Jimmy VanLare and his family for this incredible opportunity to drive the #5v sprint car for the entire Petaluma All Pro Series. I’m looking forward to it every week.”
Three weeks ago, Terrell strapped into the seat of VanLare’s car for the opening round of the 2009 Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series. Terrell’s family owned #43 was still under construction and VanLare offered the use of his machine for the night. The gesture was greatly appreciated as it prevented Terrell from missing any early season point races as he did in 2008 but still managed a top five finish in the season ending standings with four feature wins.
In the opening round of the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series, Terrell drove Vanlare’s #5v to a clean sweep of the competition at Petaluma. After winning his heat race from the third place starting position, Terrell charged up from the 8th position to take the lead of the 25-lap feature in less than seven laps.
“This is a very competitive car and a very competitive team, I’m proud to be selected to drive this car for the rest of the season in Petaluma,” added Terrell. “Jim Vanlare and his family are really good friends and I’m hoping to make a run for the All Pro Championship with them now.”
Opening night was not the first time that the combination of Terrell and VanLare were victorious at Petaluma’s 3/8 mile track. Late last season, Terrell utilized a new motor built by Vanlare to break it in. On that night he claimed victory on his hometown track as well.
For the remainder of the 2009 racing season, Terrell will drive the Vanlare Steering Repair #5v for all of the Petaluma Speedway All Pro point series events to campaign for the season championship. He plans to field his family owned #43 car for select special events such as the traveling  Civil War Series.

Flat tire with two laps to go costs Terrell lead in second All Pro Series point race

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (4/25/09)  - Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell charged his way to the front of the All Pro Sprint Car Series feature event at Petaluma Speedway last Saturday night only to have a stint of bad luck end his hopes for a two-race win streak at the track he calls home.

Driving the VanLare Steering Repair #5V Sprint Car, Terrell qualified  10th in Saturday’s second championship point race of the season at the 1/3 mile track located on the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds. After finishing third in his heat race, Terrell was ready to charge his way through the 25-lap feature event.

Terrell started eighth in the feature event. At the waving of the green flag Jeremy Burt  took the initial lead with former Petaluma champions Shawn Arriaga and Alissa Geving in tow. Meanwhile, Terrell powered into the fourth position by completion of the first lap. Going to the high side of the second turn, Terrell passed Geving for the third position and began chasing down Arriaga and Burt.

As the leaders worked into lapped traffic, Burt’s once healthy lead began to diminish as Arriaga and Terrell closed in on the early leader. On the seventh lap Arriaga collided with the lapped car of Ivan Worden and spun around but was able to remain under power and maintain his bridesmaid position until the front axle failed on the front stretch to draw a caution flag. On the restart Terrell began to close in on Burt’s lead. On the 16th lap he used the low side of turn two to take the lead from Burt.

On the 23rd lap of the event was when things took and unfortunate turn for Terrell. While running second behind Terrell, Burt flipped in the in fourth turn. Due to the 10 p.m. curfew closing in a yellow flag was thrown instead of a red. During the caution laps, Terrell’s rear tire began losing air pressure, forcing officials to black flag the #5v sprint car.

Due to an error made by track officials that also sent second place runner Geving to the pit area and took a moment to correct, Terrell’s crew as able to make the needed tire change and sent him back to the track for the final two laps of the race where he ended up finishing fifth.

“For most of the race it was really a good night for us and then it wasn’t so good,” said Terrell. “After struggling a bit in qualifying we were able to get to the front of the feature and we were looking at another win until the tire went flat. We still got a top five out of it and I’m grateful for that. I just really have to thank Jimmy Vanlare and his family for giving me the chance to drive this car for the year, it’s a great opportunity.”

Following Saturday’s fifth place finish, Terrell will take a week off from Petaluma Speedway to return to the driver’s seat of his family owned #43 sprint car for the Tribute to Al Hinds Civil War Sprint Car event at Placerville Speedway this Saturday night.

Jim Vanlare’s sponsors of the #5V sprint car include Randy Hanson Auto Body and Aussie Towing, Cameron and Cameron Vineyard and Ranch Supply and McClish Motorsports. Terrell honors his biggest fan with Mother’s Day weekend All Pro Petaluma victory

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (5/9/09) – When it comes to racing sprint cars, Bradley Terrell has many dedicated fans and one of his biggest supporters is his mother, Kim. Saturday night Terrell paid tribute to his biggest fan in fine fashion, winning his second feature event of the season on the eve of Mother’s Day in the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Sprint Car Series.

“This one is for my Mom, I’m dedicating  this win to her for Mother’s Day,” said Terrell. “I can’t thank her enough for all her support in my racing. I really wanted to win tonight for her and I did it.”

Saturday’s drive to victory was far from any cake walk for Terrell, in fact, it was more comparable to a gruelling hike through a desert canyon on a sweltering summer afternoon. Trying track conditions made passing difficult for everyone in competition throughout the third night of championship competition on the 1/3 mile oval located on the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds.

Driving the VanLare Steering Repair #5V Sprint Car, Terrell qualified 11th in Saturday’s field on a track that was already showing the effects of a breezy afternoon in the North Bay. In his preliminary heat race Terrell started in the third position and maintained that until the checkered flag where he finished behind Shawn Arriaga and Jeff Parady.

In the feature event, Terrell started in the middle of the field, on the outside of the fourth row. The waving of the green flag saw Ricky Wright Jr. powered off the outside of the front row to take the early lead of the 25-lap feature event.

Carefully working his way through the field, Terrell advanced into the top three following a restart on the fourth lap when he initiated a slingshot pass by taking the high route of turn one and two with Arriaga in his wake. Once in third, Terrell began closing in on leader Wright and second place runner Jeremy Burt.

With nine laps down, Terrell advanced into second place when Burt attempted an unsuccessful pass on Wright for the lead only to fall back several spots. Wright pulled several car lengths ahead of the field while Terrell and Arriaga duelled for the bridesmaid position with defending champion Alissa Geving in tow.

On the 18th lap, Wright fell victim to the rutted track surface when he bounced through turns one and turn and came to a stop to draw a yellow. The restart placed the former leader at the tail of the line up and put Terrell and Arriaga to the front where they spent the final laps battling for the lead.

Despite many efforts by Arriaga to pass on the low side, Terrell used the high side of the track to maintain his momentum all the way to the checkered flag where he scored his second feature win of the year in the All Pro Series. Arriaga finished second followed by Geving and Brandon Davis.

“This track was really tough tonight, it was difficult to master it,” said Terrell. “It was a fine line track with two totally different lines in each corner. I have to thank Jim VanLare and the crew for giving me a great car once again. It’s a privilege to be driving for this team this year.”

With the win, Terrell maintains the point lead in Petaluma Speedway’s All Pro Series. He will return this Saturday for the fourth championship event of the year.

Terrell maintains All Pro Sprint Series point lead with fourth place finish; Chico up next

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (5/16/09) – Sebastapol’s Bradley Terrell didn’t come home with another trophy Saturday night but he did come home with two vital things; a car that was still in one piece and the point lead in Petaluma Speedway’s All Pro Sprint Car Series.

“The track was one of the toughest I have raced on, I was lucky to finish as well as I did out there,” said Terrell. “As early as qualifying everyone knew this would be a tough night.”

Terrell finished fourth in Saturday’s 25-lap All Pro Series winged sprint car feature, aboard the VanLare Steering Repair #5V Sprint Car, Since the start of the 2009 racing season, Terrell has had much success behind the wheel of the car owned by former North Bay driver Jim Vanlare. The driver owner combination is setting their sights on Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series championship. So far they have posted two feature event victories and led the series point standings since the opening green flag of the season.

In Saturday’s event the track conditions at Petaluma Speedway were challenging as early as hot laps. In qualifying, the lap times alone illustrated the hard work that was ahead for each competitor as cooler temperatures and an ocean breezy would soon bring even further irregularities to the 1/3 mile dirt track on the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds.

In qualifying, Terrell turned a 13:359 which earned him 8th on the roster with an average speed of 99”712 miles per hour. Despite the qualifying time that placed him deep in the field, Terrell made up lost ground in the preliminary heat race, driving from his third place starting position into second by completion of the first lap and then into the lead just one lap later.

In the feature event, Terrell started in the eighth place position. With 11 laps complete he advanced into the sixth position and then moved to the fourth position by the 22nd lap where he would wrap up his night with another top five finish in what is quickly becoming the best season of his young racing career.

“I can’t go without saying thank you for Jimmy Vanlare for this opportunity again,” said Terrell. “It’s a privilege to driver this car each week and I am so appreciative for it all.”

Following Saturday’s event, it appears that Terrell maintained the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Point lead by four points unofficially. This week the series will take a week off for the holiday weekend. Terrell, however, will not be taking any time off. This weekend he will travel to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico to compete in the travelling Civil War Sprint Car Series.

The Civil War Series is a 12 race series that competes at six different area race tracks. With one event complete in the series so far, Terrell currently ranks 23rd in the series standings. Terrell will strap back into his family owned #43 sprint car for Sunday’s event, reserving the VanLare #5V for the All Pro Series that resumes on Saturday, May 30th at Petaluma.

Sponsors of the Vanlare Steering Repair #5V sprint car include Randy Hanson Auto Body and Aussie Towing, Cameron and Cameron Vineyard and Ranch Supply and McClish Motorsports.

Terrell charges through Petaluma All Pro field twice to take second place finish

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (6-13- 09) – Sebastopol ’s Bradley Terrell illustrated his ability to break even when the cards are down Saturday night. Terrell made an outstanding comeback in the All Pro winged sprint car feature event to finish in second place at the 1/3 mile Petaluma Speedway on the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California.

Driving the Vanlare Steering Repair #5v in the All Pro Championship Series event, Saturday marked Terrell’s first night behind wheel since graduating from Analy High School in Sebastopol two weeks ago. The race marked his return to the speedway he calls home after a short break in competition to allow for a special event.

Saturday night, Terrell qualified in the third position behind fast qualifier Roberto Kirby who broke the track record on the well prepared surface. Terrell’s point racing rival Alissa Geving of Penngrove timed in second overall.

In preliminary heat race competition, Terrell finished in 5th place and was well prepared for the upcoming feature event. In the feature race, Terrell originally started in the 7th position inside of Geving to initiate a crowd pleasing battle between the two top point racers in the series.

At the waving of the green flag, the field gathered up before Terrell, forcing him to decelerate and lose positions. Following the set back Terrell fell as far back as the 13th position early in the race.

Much like he has all season long, Terrell did what he does best and began a crowd raising rally towards the front of the field. By lap 15 of the event that would fall short of 25 laps due to curfew, Terrell overtook second place driver Norm Johns to close in behind Geving for the final circuits. The night would end with Terrell maintaining second place in the point standings, trailing Geving by just five points.

“It was a really good finish for me considering I fell back to 12th place or so after the start, said Terrell. “ I only wish we could have run the full 25 laps and who knows, that may have changed the outcome. I owe a lot of thanks to Jim Vanlare and the crew for giving me a great car to drive once again.”

Petaluma Speedway will not be hosting winged sprint cars in the coming and Terrell will likely head to the American Valley Speedway in Quincy for the fourth round of the travelling Civil War Sprint Car Series. The next winged sprint car event at Petaluma will be July 3 with the Civil War Series visit’s Terrell’s home track for the second time this year. The All Pro Series will resume on Saturday, July 11.

Sponsors of the Vanlare Steering Repair #5V sprint car include Randy Hanson Auto Body and Aussie Towing, Cameron and Cameron Vineyard and Ranch Supply and McClish Motorsports and A1A Performance Muffler.

Unflappable Bradley Terrell nabs sprint car win
Written by Harlan Osborne

Despite the pressure, Bradley Terrell didn’t flinch when
veteran racer Art McCarthy Jr. got a great jump on an early
restart and passed him for the lead in Saturday night’s 360
Sprint Car feature. Instead, the mild mannered Sebastopol
teenager patiently waited a few laps before returning the
favor with the same maneuver. When McCarthy again got
the jump on the less experienced 17-year-old, Terrell stayed
on the gas and got underneath McCarthy in Turn 1to regain
the lead and held on the rest of the way to secure his first
victory of the season at Petaluma Speedway.

“He got by me on the restart and I got him back, then I just held my line,” explained Terrell regarding the two encounters that preceded the triumph in which he became the fifth different All-Pro winner this year. Earlier in the program Terrell posted fast time in qualifying.

While attention focused on the battle between the front row starters
ninth-starting Roberto Kirby steadily rose through the pack before
finishing a season-best third. His effort was boosted by three yellow
flags and the first of two reds. Three laps into the race All-Pro points
leader Alissa Geving appeared to catch a rut in Turn 3 and toppled
her race car. With only minor damage she resumed racing and finished
a season-low seventh, which allowed McCarthy to carve into her points
lead. Rounding out the finish behind Terrell, McCarthy, and Kirby were
Brandon Davis, Ricky Wright Jr., Matt Sargent, Geving, Adrien Betournay, Brannon Asch, and Klint Simpson.

Teen veteran Bradley Terrell claims third Sprint Car victory

Written by Harlan Osborne

At just 17-years-old Bradley Terrell doesn’t really have the look of a veteran racer, but as we know looks can be deceiving.  As the Sebastopol teenager, who begins his senior year at Analy High School this week, is wrapping up his fourth season wheeling a potent 360 Sprint Car, he’s arguably the hottest driver competing on Petaluma Speedway’s 3/8-mile clay oval.

Saturday night, against an 18-car field, Terrell led for all but three laps of the 25-lap feature to become the first Sprint Car driver this season to notch three victories. With all three wins coming in the last six races, and a pair of third-place finishes preceding those, Terrell, ranked fifth in the All-Pro point standings is stalking fourth-ranked Roberto Kirby, whom he trails by nine points, and third-ranked Ricky Wright Jr.

Although he wasn’t the fastest in qualifying, that honor went to Brandon Davis’ 12.821, Terrell turned in the quickest lap in the feature, a 13.131 clocking, which helped him keep Wright, who aggressively pursued the leader over the final 14 laps and finished second, from overtaking him. A front row starter, Terrell yielded the front spot to Alissa Geving on Lap 7, but when Geving took a wide turn and banged the wall three laps later, resulting in a flat tire, Terrell regained the lead and never looked back the rest of the way. “So far, it’s been a pretty good season,” said Terrell, after notching his fourth career victory at Petaluma.

Third place finisher Art McCarthy, ranked second behind points leader Geving, trimmed nine points from their 40-point difference at the start of the race, and has three more chances to catch her. Brent Bjork was fourth, followed by Kirby, Geving, Klint Simpson, Davis, Dustin Baxter and Bill Cornwell.
